Joseph Paul Di Maggio, the greatest baseball player of all time, Marilyn Monroe’s ex-husband, was born on November 25, 1914 in Martinez, California, the eighth of nine children born to Italian immigrants Giuseppe DiMaggio (1872–1949) and Rosalia Mercurio (1878–1951). The parents came from Isola delle Femmine, a northwestern Sicilian village in the province of Palermo.
The legend of Joe Di Maggio (“Clipper” or “Joltin Joe”, as he was nicknamed in America) began on 9 December 1897  in Isola delle Femmine, where his parents are joined in marriage; Giuseppe Di Maggio, twenty-five years old, fisherman, and Rosalia Mercurio, nineteen years old, “does nets”, or sewer or mender of fishing nets.

Giuseppe DiMaggio was born at Isola delle Femmine on August 22, 1872.

His parents were Gaetano DiMaggio, son of Vincenzo and Adriana Pizzimenti, daughter of Antonino.

In 1902 he was joined by his wife and settled in Martinez, a small town in California just a few kilometers from San Francisco. In this stretch of coast many fishermen settle from Palermo, devoting themselves to fishing for crabs and squid.
